Therapy in English in Amersfoort

Are you living or working in the Amersfoort area and looking for a psychologist or therapist with whom you can speak English?

I offer therapy in English at my practice in Hoogland, Amersfoort. Online therapy is also available if you live further away or prefer to have your sessions from your own environment.

You do not need to speak Dutch to have therapy with me. Our sessions can be conducted in English.

What can I help you with?

People seek therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a clearly defined problem. At other times, several issues are connected or you simply notice that you keep getting stuck in the same patterns.

I can support you with issues including:

  • anxiety, panic and phobias;
  • trauma and post-traumatic stress;
  • stress, exhaustion and burnout;
  • low mood and depressive feelings;
  • grief and loss;
  • insecurity and low self-esteem;
  • perfectionism and fear of failure;
  • anger and difficulty dealing with strong emotions;
  • relationship problems;
  • fear of rejection or abandonment;
  • experiences of bullying;
  • recurring patterns in your life or relationships;
  • difficulty setting boundaries.

You do not need to know beforehand exactly what kind of therapy you need. We first look at what is happening in your life and what you would like to change.

Anxiety, panic and phobias

Anxiety can become very limiting when it starts determining what you do and avoid.

You may experience panic attacks, worry about what might happen, or avoid particular situations because they make you anxious.

I also work with specific fears and phobias, such as fear of driving or flying, fear of animals, performance anxiety, fear of blushing and agoraphobia.

We explore what triggers your anxiety and what experiences or beliefs may be contributing to it.

Trauma and difficult experiences

Experiences from the past can continue to influence how you feel and respond in the present.

Sometimes this relates to one clearly traumatic event. In other cases, the impact has developed through repeated experiences, such as bullying, rejection, difficult childhood experiences or feeling unsafe over a longer period of time.

I have extensive experience working with trauma and trauma-related problems.

Depending on your situation, we can work with the memories themselves as well as the beliefs, emotions, physical responses and relationship patterns connected to them.

Stress and burnout

Long-term stress can gradually affect both your emotional and physical wellbeing.

You may find it difficult to relax, feel constantly under pressure or notice that you have less and less energy.

Sometimes patterns such as perfectionism, taking too much responsibility or finding it difficult to set boundaries contribute to the problem.

Therapy can help you understand not only what is causing your stress, but also why certain patterns keep repeating.

Self-esteem, insecurity and perfectionism

You may function well on the outside while privately doubting yourself.

Perhaps you worry a lot about what other people think, find criticism difficult, compare yourself with others or feel that whatever you do is never quite good enough.

Such feelings do not necessarily disappear simply because you know rationally that you are being too hard on yourself.

We can explore the experiences and beliefs underlying your insecurity and how they continue to affect you today.

Relationship difficulties

Our earlier experiences can influence how we connect with other people.

You may find it difficult to trust, be afraid of being rejected or abandoned, or repeatedly find yourself in similar patterns within relationships.

I work with individuals as well as couples experiencing relationship difficulties.

Where relevant, we can look at attachment, earlier experiences and the interaction patterns that have developed between you and your partner.

How I work

I am a psychologist and therapist and work from an integrative approach.

Rather than applying the same method to everyone, I look at your individual situation and use therapeutic approaches that fit your needs.

My methods include EMDR, Logosynthesis, Neuro-Linguistic Psychotherapy (NLPt) and mindfulness.

I have worked with EMDR since 2006 and regularly use it when difficult or traumatic experiences continue to cause emotional distress.

Therapy is more than understanding the problem

Understanding why you feel or behave in a certain way can be very helpful.

But insight alone does not always change how you feel.

You may understand perfectly well that a fear is irrational or that a negative belief about yourself is unfair and still experience it as true.

For this reason, my work is not limited to talking about your difficulties. Where appropriate, we also work with the emotions, memories, beliefs and patterns underlying them.

Online therapy in English

If travelling to my practice is difficult or you do not live near Amersfoort, online therapy in English is also possible.

Online sessions take place through secure video calling. This means that you can have your sessions from your own private environment without travel time or travel costs.

We can discuss whether online sessions are suitable for your particular situation.
